Tata Infotech was established in 1977 as a joint venture between Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group in India and Unisys Corporation (hitherto Burroughs Corporation) of USA. In 1996, Unisys sold their 40% stake in the Tata Group as a result of which the Tatas then held 80% of their share capital in the country. This called for a change in name from Tata Unisys to Tata Infotech. Presently 74% of Tata Infotech's shares are held by the Tata Group whereas 26% are held by the public.
It was established to implement a 100% export-oriented project to manufacture computer peripherals, at SEEPZ, Bombay. Tata Infotech (TIL) operates primarily in three spheres -- providing computer software and software services in India and abroad, manufacturing and marketing imported Unisys mainframe computers and providing after-sales support. In 1985, TIL set up a plant at Goa, to manufacture MICR document encoders and reader sorters in technical collaboration with Burroughs Corp., US. Tata Infotech Limited is part of the $9 billion Tata Group, India's oldest, largest and trusted conglomerate.
Tata Infotech has built an international reputation for being a highly competent systems integrator and solutions provider. Having executed more than 5,000 projects worldwide with a strong presence in the USA, UK, Continental Europe, Japan, Australia and India the company is now gearing itself to meet the challenges of the next century
The operations of the company has widely classified into three business segments and they are Systems Integration Systems which brings the company's and key partner's capabilities including hardware, software and services together to offer the complete IT Solutions, Manufacturing Services which the company is engaged in contract manufacturing of electromechanical products and also providing design and engineering services and Education Services where the company provides IT Eductation services including computer-based training and e-learning solutions to serve the needs of its clients.
The subsidiaries of the company are Exegenix Canada Inc., Tata Infotech (Singapore) Pte Ltd which has commenced the operations during 2004-05 and Tata Infotech Deutschland GmbH has not yet commenced operations.
In the year 2000, the company finalised a strategic relationship with Wausau Financial Systems (WFS), US, and the major part in this relationship is the manufacture of ATMs for WFS. WFS will distribute the ATMs in the international market while Tata Infotech will market them under its brand name in India. The company intends to launch these ATMs by Jan.-Feb. 2001.
In order to service better in the US, the company has set up a new intermediate development centre in Chicago in addition to the existing 11 offices. In its efforts to increase its geographical coverage it signed a MoU with Consilience Technologies (Pty), South Africa to market and support its products and services in the key sectors and to facilitate the business of company's Education Service division. The company has set up a subsidiary in Canada in May 2001 to increase its presence in the North American markets.
In Oct. 2001, Tata Infotech has signed a Rs 9-crore agreement with Air India to provide comprehensive IT systems maintenance and facility management services for Air India's mission-critical applications.
The financial year 2003-04 was significant as the company was poured by several awards including 'IBM Partner World Award 2003' for being the Best Software/SI/Solution Provider in Western India.
During 2004-05 the company has commenced offering its manufacturing services to an overseas customer through a Software Technology Park set up in Goa, the implementataion of ROHS (restriction of use of certain hazardous substances) and WEEE (Waste management of electrical and electronic equipments).
