Spice Communications Limited (Spice or SCL), a cellular company was incorporated on 28th March 1995 as a private limited company under the name of 'Modicom Network Private Limited'. The company provides Cellular Phone Services in the states of Punjab and Karnataka presently. The various services of the company under Post Paid and Prepaid connection includes Radio, Caller Songs, Entertainment, Contests, Infotainment, Call Management Service, Short Messaging Service, Dial in Service, GPRS, Incoming Call Block, Background Music, Spice Emergency Service, DND, Spice Mail, BID For VIP Numbers and also Spice TV. The company is now working under the control of Idea Cellular on the recent acquisition by the Idea.
During the year 1995-96, the company got the H-1 position in three circles, i.e. it was the highest bidder for getting the license in Karnataka, Punjab and Rajasthan telecom circles, but SCL opted for only two telecom circles of Karnataka and Punjab. Accordingly the company entered into license agreement with Department of Telecommunication (DoT) for operation of Cellular Mobile Telephone Services in the aforesaid telecom circles in the year 1996. Commencement of commercial operations was made by the company in May of the year 1997 in Karnataka Circle and June 1997 in Punjab Circle.
Spice became as a deemed public company with effect from 1st April of the year 1999 and the name of the company was changed to 'Modicom Network Limited'. The name of the company was further changed to 'Spice Communications Limited' vide fresh certificate of incorporation dated 3rd December 1999. The Company obtained Internet Service Provider (ISP) license in the year 2002. With addition of the word Private' in the name of the company, the name was again changed to 'Spice Communications Private Limited' on 28th October 2003. During the year 2004, SCL had migrated to Unified Access Services.
In March of the year 2006, TM through its wholly owned subsidiary TMI Mauritius purchased the entire share capital of DCIL, Subsequently the name of DCIL was changed to TMI India. The status of the company was converted into a public limited on 28th December of the year 2006 and the name was changed to the present one 'Spice Communications Limited'. SCL achieved 2 million subscriber bases in the year 2006 itself. Spice obtained letter of Intent for National Long Distance and International Long Distance (NLD/ILD) service licence during the year 2007 from DoT. The company came out with Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the identical year of 2007.
SCL had launched a first-of-its-kind in the world Handset Combo Offer with a unique handset & a Spice connection in June of the year 2008. Idea cellular had acquired Spice Communications in the year 2008; hence the company is now under which Idea Cellular.
